Guatemala, good to the last drop

Guatemala, good to the last drop
Humboldt Bay Coffee Company to feature Women-Certified co-op coffee
by Luis F. Molina

Every morning starts the same way at Humboldt Bay Coffee Company. We make a pot of coffee. Every day it is the same ritual: measure, blend, grind, properly place the filter and hit the "brew button." It can be monotonous. But once in a while there a coffee comes around that gets us all excited. The coffee that has it elated is a new batch of fair-trade organic Guatemalan coffee grown by a women-ran co-op.
This Guatemalan coffee comes from the Huehuetenango region and is grown in the mountains of Sierra de las Minas and Sierra de Chama.  This coffee is the pride and joy of an all Women Cooperative known as Adisque "Sello de Mujer".  Boasting rich flavors of dark chocolate and orange peel this coffee has a nice acidity and smooth body. This is a great coffee that allows you support women organic farmers!
This excellent can be found at most grocery stores in Humboldt County as well as on our website, www.humboldtbaycofee.com and at our visitor center at 526 Opera Alley, Eureka, CA or call (707) 444-3969.

For the Glory!

Humboldt Bay Coffee Company goes to the Kinetic Sculpture Race

by Luis F. Molina

The Kinetic Sculpture Grand Championship is a Humboldt County tradition that is unique to our little community nestled in between the forest and the ocean.
According to the Kinetic Sculpture Grand Championship website the event is a is a three-day, 42-mile bicycle race along California's Lost Coast from "Arcata to Ferndale. Racers compete for glory in all variety of people-powered kinetic kontraptions, pedaling along roads, the beach...even through Humboldt Bay."
The race features works of art that can be used as transportation vessels as long as they are powered by people pedaling. Humboldt Bay Coffee Company sponsored the vessel "The Funkin' Pizza Ship," and Humboldt Bay Coffee co-owner Mark Harlan was part of the crew. "The Funkin' Pizza Ship" (pictured below), well, the name calls it like it is and it is just that. It is a pirate ship that looks like it was built by Peter Pan's imagination. The ship sits on two bicycle frames and four times; the ship has a squid stuck on its side and, a spare tire hanging from the bow or the front part or the bow for you with sea legs. The ship broke down a couple of times on its 42-mile journey across the bay, over the dunes and finally into Ferndale.
"One of the best and most enjoyable parts of the weekend was that the ship would break down and we would all yell 'ahh this Funkin' Pizza Ship broke down!'" said Mark. "It was a great weekend and I want to do it again."
Mark followed "The Funkin' Pizza Ship" from the beginning of the race in Arcata to Ferndale on a two-story tall purple bicycle. He had to use the top of his pick-up truck to mount it. Mark stopped by Humboldt Bay Coffee Company on the second day of the race. Jaime Bazan, Humboldt Bay Coffee production, took advantage of the opportunity. He jumped on top of Mark's truck and rode the two-story purple bike.
"I was scared the first time I rode it, the second time I was better on it. My daughter was scared for me," Jaime said.
Mark went on to Ferndale after the brief pit stop. "It really hurt when I fell off of it, but thankfully it was on to grass," Mark said. "I stopped a couple of times and put my foot on top of a cars just so I could get a rest."
Mark was not done for working when the race came to a stop at the end of the day. Mark sold Humboldt Bay Coffee Company coffee to the public and donated free coffee to race participants.
The last day of the race there is a great big party and every one has a blast. The next morning every one wakes up on the beach.
Humboldt Bay Coffee was there to make waking up a little easier for people. "People are walking around groggy wearing costumes like aliens or squids," said Mark who handed out more than 300 cups of coffee to Kinetic Grand Championship participants.
Humboldt Bay Coffee Company would like to thank Blaze O'Glory who made it possible for us to participate and contribute to a great Humboldt County tradition.

Humboldt Mud Pie has arrived!

Humboldt Mud Pie, you won't be able to resist

Local companies come together to create delicious treat

by Luis F. Molina

A lot of good things are happening here at Humboldt Bay Coffee
Company. One of the more exciting things happening around here is the
Humboldt Mud Pie. The Humboldt Mud Pie is the collaborative efforts of
local companies Dick Taylor Chocolates, Natural Decadence and Humboldt
Bay Coffee Company.

"We anticipate anyone who likes coffee or chocolate to love this pie,"
said Natural Decadence owner Milia Lando. "I think that ends up being
roughly all of mankind."

Natural Decadence felt there was a need for a soy-free pie. The
Humboldt Mud Pie was inspired by the partnership Natural Decadence
formed with the Tofu Shop earlier this in 2013.

"This has been such a positive experience for us, we get a quality
product, and we have a chance to support another local business," said
Milia. "This product came together organically through the
relationship that we have with Humboldt Bay Coffee Company and Dick
Taylor Chocolate."

Milia went on to say that the "owners of the companies are inspiring,
and they both make high quality products. We have worked with Humboldt
Bay Coffee Company and wanted to incorporate Dick Taylor Chocolates
into our products because their chocolate is superior to the rest."

Natural Decadence is a line of baked goods that are made without
gluten, eggs, dairy, or nuts. Some of Natural Decadence products are
also made without soy, because they understand the need for naturally
decadent foods that are made to suit many different diets, according
to the Natural Decadence website. Their product line includes pies,
cookies, graham crackers and shortbreads.

The new addition to their menu, the Humboldt Mud Pie, is sure to delight.

"We served our Humboldt Mud Pie at the buyers tour we organized
earlier this year," Milia said. "The Humboldt Mud Pie was a smashing
success, and people have been asking us for the pie ever since. Whole
Foods is excited to have it on their shelves."

To make the Humboldt Mud Pie, Natural Decadence took its naturally
decadent gluten-free fudge cookie and made it into a crust. They then
used Humboldt Bay Coffee Company's Espresso Blend and Natural
Decadence's
home-made gluten-free vanilla extract to make kahlua. Then
they mixed in some Dick Taylor Chocolate, and came up with a decadent
chocolate-kahlua cream-less filling, which is gluten-free, egg-free,
dairy-free, nut-free and soy-free, and taste amazing!

Humboldt Mud Pie will be available in the freezer section of both
North Coast Co-Ops, Eureka Natural Foods, Wildberries Marketplace,
Murphy's in Trinidad, and Chautaukua Natural Foods.

Additionally, this blog will come alive with regular musings about what's going on with coffee, or even just to wish a TGIF!

Keep an eye on www.humboldtcoffee.com as it will soon be transformed.
